I have a nearly 3 y/o setter who was sired by JR. He is an absolute joy in the field and in the home.
I would recommend contacting Wes if you're looking for a hard hunting setter and a quality family pet.

I have been hunting with Wes for so long that I forgot when we first met. I have hunted with him on my ranch, my leases, his leases and on friend's places. He has first class dogs and has a passion for hunting wild birds. He is a hard worker and will hunt any schedule you like. Many of the greatest times I have had in many years of bird hunting have been with Wes. Wes is a real professional in the field and if you're thinking about boarding a dog at his kennels, your dog is in for a treat. That's because Brenda, his wife, treats all the dogs like they were royalty. Barr Kennels is first class!

It was love at first sight when I saw Jim McVey's new setter pup, Abi. Two weeks later Sophie! arrived in Virginia from Abilene. While Sophie is only the second setter I've owned/trained I have hunted over them for 45 years and have never had a better time with a smarter, more energetic and birdie bitch than this little black and white pup. She practically trained herself, makes me look much more skillful than I am, does land and water retrieves like a labrador, and thinks she's a lapdog when she's inside. Killed over 100 birds over her, both wild and preserve, this year before she was 1 year old and could not be more pleased.

Wes Barr is equally both a high quality bird dog trainer/breeder, and a high quality individual. The facilities are top notch. The care for the dogs is unsurpassed due to the dedication and efforts of his wife, Brenda. I have both acquired and kenneled dogs with Wes and Brenda since 1996, and have hunted with Wes over his guide dogs each year. I could not be more pleased with all aspects.

I met Wes through a mutual friend and purchased one of his setters pups last year. She was standing birds steady at 11 months. Abi from Abilene is a true gift from Texas for me up here in Virginia.

Our first puppy to get from this kennel was out of Tomoka's Smokin J.R. and Barr's Smokin MacKenzie. This was the first time to purchase a puppy site unseen, but we were not worried in the least bit. Knew exaclty what kind of a bird dog she would make coming from this match. We picked her up there at the kennel and was so impressed with the whole operation-I told my wife this place is top notch. Great guy to do business with --and the puppy, well she will be as good if not better in the field as the other pups J.R. has thrown.

I have competed against the Barr dogs in both regional and national NSTRA competitions. You can always expect the Barr dogs to be super talented and well trained bird dogs.
I absolutely recommend Wes Barr to anyone looking for a good hunting dog or trial dog.

I have two English setters from Barr Kennels, both of which we got as pups and are out of Tamokas Smokin' JR. Seeing JR run in NSTRA trials and experiencing his loving personality made me know that I wanted one of his pups for my own. Actually, we ended up with two of his pups, both females. Kate is three now, and is the sweetest natured and most biddable dog I have ever owned. Although loving and gentle, she is very serious about her bird work. Annie is a little over one year old and lives to hunt. Her enthusiasm and energy are boundless. She is also gentle and loves attention. Both dogs are equally at home in their outdoor kennels and in the house. They are well mannered and calm indoors, but love to hit the fields and go hunting.
I have known Wes for over 15 years and can vouch for his honesty, extensive knowledge and experience with hunting dogs. I have no reservations in recommending a dog from his kennels to my friends and family.

Wes Barr and Barr Kennels puts on a truly "pure" wild quail hunt. The birds are there for the hunting. The dogs do great work and then it us up to the hunters to "hit em". Wes is a man how is truly doing what he is passionate about. You get a good quail hunt and a great perspective on life that is getting harder and harder to find. If you book a hunt with Wes...bring along some orange surveyors tape and get ready for a great story!

I have had the pleasure not only watching Wes with Blu and J.R Which are nothing more then phenomenal in the field, The progeny from these dogs are showing to be birdy and classy and strong in the field.
If you want a quality setter look no further. From wild birds to trials you will not be disappointed.

I have used Wes and his guides on a large lease in Childress County, TX. His dogs are always up to the task of covering large open pastures to tight river bottom covers. I have had the privilege to hunt all across our great state on some of the top ranches with top guides and dogs and Wes Barr is by far at the top of the list. I highly recommend him.

Having trialed with Wes Barr at NSTRA trials at a National level for over a decade I can testify that Barr Kennels only breeds and trials the best. The many National Championship wins and Champions produced attest to the quality of dogs from this kennel. Tom McCandless

Barr Kennels and Wes Barr have been very supportive of our organization, the West Texas Rehabiliation Center. Over the years they have donated top quality puppies to our TOP GUN Clay Shoot fundraiser. These puppies have been sold to hunters who gave them great homes, all the while raising many dollars for our organization and the patients we serve. Buyers have always been pleased with the quality of these puppies. We appreciate Barr Kennels.
