TREMENDOUS HUNTING DESIRE, DRIVE, AND INTELLIGENCE. GREAT COMPANION WITH STEADY TEMPERMENT AND LOVES KIDS. OTIS (MAKO) IS JUST OVER A YEAR OLD AND HAS BEEN FLUSHING BIRDS, MAKING RETRIEVES (WATER TOO!), BLOOD TRACKING WOUNDED GAME, AND FOLLOWING BASIC OBEDIENCE COMMANDS SINCE HE WAS 4-5 MONTHS OLD. A TRUE PLEASURE. I CAN'T WAIT TILL NEXT SEASON! THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE WITH DAVE AND EAGLE RIVER WAS AMAZING - INFORMATIVE, HELPFUL, AND PROFESSIONAL. THEY LOVE THEIR DOGS AND LEAD THE WAY IN BREED STANDARDS AND PRESERVATION.

I have a Eagle River Wachtelhund I got from Dave Pepe, she will be 4 this may. I started hunting her the first fall I had her at 5 months old. She just gets better every year. They have great hunting ability and are great companions as well, they live to hunt and to please you. Dave does a wonderful job of keeping the breed up to the breed standards. I highly recommend a wachtel to any serious hunter. After hunting with one I would never choose another breed.

We purchased a Wachtelhund from Dave Pepe when Dave was living in Eagle River, Alaska. Dave had posted a notice at a local mill and feed store advertising rare hunting dog puppies. We visited Dave and were immediately impressed by his two adult dogs, Nixe and Whisco. A week or so later we brought home Jaggs, a male pup. He was part of our family and my hunting partner from 1996 to 2009.

I am not an experienced dog trainer but overall I'd say I was very successful with Jaggs. Based on what I have learned over the years by being around Jaggs and other Wachtels, if I was training him again there are things I would do different, but overall he was a very good family and hunting dog. He learned quickly and responded to voice, whistle and hand signals. In the field he was highly motivated and he was a very tough and durable hunter. He was also true to other Wachtels I have hunted with, in that he had a nose that would not quit. At some point in the future, we will purchase another Wachtel and we will not hesitate buying a pup from Dave.

One side note is that Dave and I started hunting our dogs together on grouse in 1997. Even after Dave left Alaska we continued hunting together. Our yearly hunting adventures have taken us and our dogs to four other states in search of pheasants.

We purchased Mowgli last summer from Eagle River Wachtelhunds and let me say that we could not be any happier with him. We live in Alaska and he loves the water, snow, brush and mountains that we have access to. Great retriever as well as a fantastic family/kid companion. I would for sure recommend Dave's kennel to anyone looking for a tremendous bird dog and family companion.

We purchased our dog, Lara vom Eagle River, from Dave Pepe in July 2010. She has exceeded our expectations as a hunting dog and companion. Her health is excellent and we have had no problems with skin, ears, hips, knees.

Dave's availability to us when we had questions about training has been invaluable to us; and we find it exceptional that a breeder would continue his involvement with his buyers so long after a sale.

We would highly recommend this breed and Eagle River Wachtelhunds to all serious hunters and their families. Dave's dogs are beautiful, loving and intelligent; a superlative combination.

Great Dogs. We have had one Eagle River Wachtelhund in the past -she lived to almost 14 years old and presently have a 2year old whose father was born an Eagle River Wachtelhund. Both have proved to be excellant hunters with steady, pleasing temperments and great conformation. we are anxiosly awaiting our next puppy from this breeder. She is due to be born in April and we can hardly wait to bring her into our pack.

We purchased a Wachtelhund from Dave Pepe 4 years ago in May. We have had many hunting dogs in our lives and our Wachtelhund hands down is the best hunting dog we have ever owned. We are in the process of getting her hips OFA and will be looking to Dave to recommend a good stud for Raisin (JAVA). Her drive to hunt is incredible, yet she is an amazing calm family dog. If we could have turned back the clock 20 years this would have been the only hunting dogs we would have ever purchased. Thank you Dave for giving us the opportunity to help grow the bread with the same strong health genetics as was given to us by Germany.
