I got, "Sassy" CH Sasafras and Irish Stew JH WD, , as a puppy in Jan 1989.. I had no intentions of showing or hunt testing dogs at the time. I just wanted a hunting companion. She turned out to be a wonderful friend, hunting buddy, and keeper of the house and truck. They were her possessions. But she also loved people. And was a great foundation bitch to start my line with.
At present we have Marshlans Goosy Miss Lucy, and SHR UCH Marshlans Queen Of Da Marsh JH CGC WD, aka Lola. She is one of our 5th generation puppies.
We occasionally have puppies for sale. We belong to the American Chesapeake Club, HRC, Fish Point Wildlife Association, and Ducks Unlimited.
Marshlan is an AKC registered kennel name.
Have a great 2016. Thanks for all your inquiries, and to those of you that have gotten puppies from us, thanks for your support and recommendations.
It's always been our intentions to provide the best health checked Chesapeake Bay Retrievers as possible. We do not breed to dogs without health clearances. Our health clearances on our dogs are available on request.
Lola has completed running hunt tests in AKC and UKC formats with Tina doing the handling.
Lola, w/Tina handling took her first pass at the HRC/UKC hunt test in Pioneer OH, 9-22-2013. This was the first test for both of them. Good job girls.
On 10-5 and 10-6, 2013, at the American Chesapeake Club hunt tests in Chardon Ohio, Lola w/Tina handling her, got 2 JH passes. These gals rock!!!!!
3-8-2014 Lola completed her UKC confirmation title at Mason MI. In a two weekend period she earned 9 Best of Breeds, a Group 3 and her title. She was the #3 Chesapeake Bay Retriever in UKC conformation for 2014. Her mother and half sibling are also in the Top 10.
Lola finished her AKC Junior Hunt title 4-13-2014, at Backwater Retriever Club hunt tests in North Webster, IN.
May 10-11, 2014 Lola earned two more passes on her quest for her SHR title, at Kalamazoo Valley HRC hunt tests. She completed her SHR title 6-07-2014 at the Central Michigan HRC test in Williamston MI. And obtained her American Chesapeake Club WD title.
Lola also completed her AKC Canine Good Citizen title, 5-31-2014 handled by Dave Gean. Check our Marshlan Chesapeake Facebook page for current updates. We are planning a late spring breeding 2018 of Lola...This will be her last litter......Please contact us with any questions.... I am from North Carolina and recently purchased a Chesapeake from Dave and Tina from their Spring 2015 litter by Castor and Lola. I grew up with Chesapeakes and was looking for a good gun dog. After looking at over 100 adds, narrowing them down to 5 breeders, and calling them for an interview, it was hands down the easiest choice I have ever made by selecting Marshlan Chesapeakes as the breeder.
After committing to Marshlan Chesapeakes, the hard part became clear. Dave and Tina had produced such a fine litter that any dog would have been a prize! Through their constant feedback, expert knowledge of the breed, and hands on approach with the pups, Dave directed me to the dog that would be best suited for my home and my needs in the field.
At 10 1/2 months, my dog, Sprig, has had over 170 touches with at least 60 of them being over 75 yards through multiple cover changes. Cripples are no problem, as the nose on this dog is beyond excellent. His temperament is extraordinary. I have a 17 month old son whom Sprig loves with a passion. I look forward to them hunting together soon!
This dog from Marshlan Chesapeakes is shaping up to be the one dog we all get in a lifetime that makes hunting so much more than shooting birds! Thank you, Dave and Tina for a truly gifted animal!!!

Marshlan Chesapeakes are great breeders! They produce high performing and even tempered dogs. They care about the breed and about each and every dog they have. I lost my chessie a year ago. I was very lucky to have found Dave and Tina. They kept in contact while I was waiting for a puppy to inform me what was going on. They went out of their way in answering my questions. They listened and helped me in my grieving process after I lost Belle. I would highly recommend them as breeders. I think you will find not only did you find a great breeder, but a friend as well.

Dave and Tina are great breeders to work with. They are very knowledgeable about the breed and breeding. They always gave great help and input for any questions that arose. Also they invited us to their home to meet before and after the puppies were born. They were and still are in communication with us for follow ups and anything we made need. They are also the only breeder I know of that uses a web cam for the puppies so you can see them anytime of day and all their antics. We highly recommend them and would never go anywhere else.

My experience was very positive. I adopted Bear at 8 weeks, and Dave and Tina were knowledgeable and careful breeders of my Chesapeake Bay retriever. They know and love the breed, aiming for dogs of good temperament and hunting skill. All the dogs went home within 24 hours of adopability, with not a single bad choice in the litter.

Dave at Marshlan Chesapeakes is an excellent breeder and a great all around guy. We purchased our Chessie Jack, almost 4 years ago, and he is by far the best dog I have owned. He is excellent in the field and great with our kids. He has never had any health problems and Marshlan's unique way or beginning training early, really has helped to with gun shying and retrieving. I highly recommend Marshlan's if you are looking for a new Chessie.

We bought Mikey, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, from Marshlan Chesapeakes in July, 2009. Dave has always been accessible and ready to answer questions or discuss issues about the breed in general, or specifically about Mikey. We stay in contact with him and have even visited his house and his Chessies with Mikey on occasion. Mikey is a very handsome, highly-trainable, intelligent family dog. He had a touch of a nervous bladder for the first 2 years in new situations and especially when being kenneled. Mikey is a very tenatious swimmer and gets along well with other dogs. He is a strong retriever and is very lovable and loyal to his family. Mikey is attentive and snuggly. I have lots of pictures and video clips of this dog to share if you want to hit me up on email.

Outstanding dogs with great genetic lineage. I could not be more pleased with my Chessie (Pope) that I got through Marshlan Chesapeakes! Pope is only 1.5 years old but is an already very obediant and is wonderful with my children ages 2 and 3.
In short...MY dog is BOSS!

Dave Gean is what one would hope for in a breeder. He’s experienced, knowledgeable, involved with the breed and happy to share what he knows. His Chesapeakes are a part of his family and are active in the field and show ring. After a conversation with Dave you’ll feel confident he’s dedicated to carefully selecting dogs for their temperament, hunting abilities and conformation; keeping the breed true to its intended form and function while producing great family companions. Over the years we’ve purchased two beautiful Chesapeakes from Dave and both have had exceptional dispositions and a lot of drive!
