Kill Report

Waterfowl season is coming to an end. Good year for Geese, bad year for Ducks here in Southern Illinois. Would like to here how some guys did in other parts of the country.

The waterfowl hunting up here in South Dakota was unbelieveable. The hatch was outstanding and the migrant birds stuck around. This was an unbelievable waterfowl season all around. We killed over 200 honkers this year. The duck harvest was also very impressive. I have a ton of people that are coming back next year with very high expectations. I hope the numbers are around again next year.

I live on the St. Joseph River in SW Michigan. We had two "once every 10 year" floods this year, the later in the spring which affected the nesting grounds for Mallards if not Wood Ducks. However have not seen the numbers of the "locals" this year or the seasonal visitors from further North. The geese have not been on the river in numbers but still seeing tons in the corn and bean fields. On the bright side the summer steele head fishing was great.

SD was incredible around the aberdeen area for about a month the snows greenheads and pintails filled the sky. Even had a great morning shooting GW teals. Late summer rains flooded the crop fields and kept the birds around. I may not go back to Canada next year if i get drawn again. MN waterfowl was fowl again for the most part. The birds are just not coming through like they have in the past.

What’s a duck? I don’t recall seeing any of those out here on the Colorado prairie.

You seen what we saw. I run a hunting lodge near Aberdeen. We are located 35 miles east of Aberdeen so I saw the same thing you did this fall. The migration was incredible through here. We had a record duck and goose harvest last fall. Waterfowling in Northeastern SD is becoming a very popular destination.

Coteau are you south of groten? We hunted inbetween condi and Groten and stayed in Columbia. We wer drawn for a ten day and it was great. We do a ton of upland there too. We hunt mainley public some private. There wer a couple of guys from MN late season Mallard hunting. Everything was frozen except what 10,000 birds kept open and they wer smashing them. Real cold but worth it. Is that the best waterfowling you have seen in SD?

Northern Indiana hunting was fair at best. Still have some local birds that we get to hunt next week with liberal limits. Most of my success was in Northwest Kansas where the family farm is located. The weather was really goofy this year which made the Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge not as hot as usual, but for some reason we had geese all around the farm coming off of one small pond. I worked really hard but finally had a great two days toward the end of December. Nice talking to you...good luck next year!

Ya, we are 12 miles south of Groton. You had to of been within a few miles of our lodge. This was the second best season we have ever had here. It was amazing and next year is looking very promising as well. We had a ton of duck hunters come through this year from all over the country (even a few Georgia boys). It is one I will always remember, thats for sure.
