huntin' preserves

Postby Schroeder » Thu Feb 25, 2010 10:55 am

is there any hunting preserve in the midwest, that would be open during the summertime? I'm looking for a place that would allow to hunt "work" with the dog during the summer before the fall season.
thanks

Depending on your local laws you should be able to train year round. There are a few hunting preserves in Michigan that also offer gun dog training. Another thing you may want to look into is a breed club, many of them have fun hunts and hunt tests during the summer months just for this purpose.

yes there are some in MN Schroeder, I will double check and get back to you. We train at a couple all year. And I think there are folks that go out at the same time. We also send in for a permit thats free to train on live birds and ammo all year on private land. What area are you in?

I agree. Here in Michigan we like to go to Variety Farms in Hartland, MI. It does depend on what state you are in, but I can only imagine that most state laws are fairly similar. Since preserves typically raise their own birds and the land is private the birds that exist on the preserve property are not part of any natural resource regulations. In other words they are not wild birds and can not be regulated in the same way.

There is a Wildlife Management Area near Millaca, MN called Four Brooks that allows dog training over the summer with a grounds pass ($20). The Field Trialing Association leases it from the State and you can get a pass from them.
