What are you looking for in a pup when you are going to choose one out of the litter?
more active or layed back? big or small? the runt?

What are you looking for hunting companion hunting trialing how much experience do you have with dogs

Have you picked a breeder that has a solid breeding program or just some people who allowed some dogs to procreate and has a litter available with no regards to what they have allowed to breed.

Do both the dam and sire have the desired traits you are wanting in your pup

Reason I ask all these questions is what you ultimately want and how much experience you have will have a lot to do with which pup would be the best potential

If you have a knowledgeable breeder they will have far more ideas of which pups in the litter will be closer to what you seek as they will have a much better idea of how the pups are over all then you can figure out in an hour or less and then they can help narrow the choice to the best prospects for what you seek

more bold and independent pups should go to those that have more experience as they will test that parameters more which if you do not know how to guide and direct these traits can turn into a very frustrating time for new owners

Yes, i have picked a breeder that has an awesome chocolate upland hunting dog and he got the dog bred with a stud that also has great hunting lines. I have owned 2 previous labs before and i know how subborn they can get if not trained right away. My question is that does it matter if the pup is big or small? i have had my eye on the runt that is real mellow but not spooked in any way. is this going to cause problems for me in the future? thanks

Just because the dog is the smallest of the litter now doesn't mean it will stay the smallest over all. I personally like the smaller dogs as many times as they can be more bound and determined.

But if the dog has everything you want and you trust the breeding and everything else seems right go for it
