when to neuter lab?

Postby VZKennel » Thu Aug 05, 2010 9:17 am

I am getting my first male ever this fall. He's get pretty fancy bloodlines and I will be hunt test campaigning him. What is everyone's experience on the best time to neuter, should he not turn out to be a GHRCH/MH ;) I don’t want to cut him right away in case he does turn out great - was just seeking some advice in terms of how long do I have to make up my mind. Can cutting him too early hurt his physical development at all? Thanks!

I do not like to neuter until they have fully developed as Yes it can elongate the femur bone which can cause issues

You'll find a lot of varying opinion from vets as to when is best.

I'm not a vet, but I've been a breeder for many years. My experience is that with regard to health, there isn't any time that's too late, but there is clearly a time that's too soon.

With respect to health, wait until the dog is physically mature. At least 1-1/2 years old. Nuetering alters hormone production, which in turn does affect skeletal development and muscle growth. I've seen many dogs that were neutered at less than a year of age, that look like bitches - just small and with little substance.

If part of your concern is that you may want your dog to be intact should he turn out to be a top performer, then by all means wait until his training is well under way and you've had a chance to make a valid assessment of his potential.

Be aware also, that contrary to "myth", neutering does not change a dogs disposition, and it does not make a dog stay at home if he isn't fenced in. The only difference in that regard, is that he won't have any interest in a bitch in season.
