starting to breed

Postby Brad Pollington » Sat Nov 20, 2010 7:59 am

I am a bird hunter and considering getting started in breeding and training. I want to train/breed English Pointers and my son want to do GSP's. I have heard alot of heresay on the difference between the two breeds. I have hunted alot behind the GSP that friends have owned but not the english. I have heard alot about lineage in certain pedigree's, that determine if the dogs tend to hunt close or in the next county. My real question is how do we find out this information, if its true, and how to get started. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brad

I would start by getting the american field watch what dogs are doing well
Learn you dogs pedigrees

You need to also learn how to evaluate your dogs..The easy part is tossing two dogs with papers in the same areas to produce a batch of puppies...

But putting together a real program takes a bit more..
Getting OFA's done just because a dog does not show any clinical signs of problems does not mean they are breeding stock
temperments conformation

Most important What will you do with pups that do not sale ..have bargain bin lower the price because they are not selling...Go to the main page see how many people are producing pups...Ask yourself why should someone want to buy a pup from you over what other breeders are doing?

What Guarantees will you offer or is it take the money and run and not care what happens to the pups after that

Training...Easier said then done..I know people who have gone through some pretty extensive learning and even did the hunt smith seminars AND training program and after 2 years he is hanging it up...first it isn't a big money maker training dogs and second you have to deal with owners...That in it self can be a huge pain because they can undo in minutes what you spend weeks to get done and it is YOUR fault when fido falls to pieces

Or you really need to learn how to deal with a large array of dogs and starting out.don't expect to get the quality bred pups till you are a proven trainer ..expect to get some dogs with issues from being down right spoiled to some pup that comes from two dogs that should have been kept out of the gene pool

You really want to make a go of it..prove your dogs first..trial them or do something where people can say Wow I would love to have a pup from that dog...Then have a plan ...There are plenty of good buddies that say they want a pup but then when you have that litter on the ground and you tell them they back out on you faster then a straight guy walking into a gay bar

and when you post litters online plan for a bunch of scammers and tire kickers
