Backyard Quail?

Postby greg deegan » Wed Jun 30, 2010 7:05 am

Is it a bad idea to get a couple dozen quail and raise them in garage 1st then with pen and coop in far back corner of backyard with my english setters kennel in backyard also. Got a small backyard ,1/4 acre with patio, 1 car driveway parking & a 6 foot creek toward the back(quail would be on other side)

I don't think there is any problem with keeping dogs close to the birds. Just make sure your pen is secure because the dogs will want to get in there. I use bobwhite quail a lot with a recall pen at the training grounds.

yep, I used a recall pen when I had a gordon setter also had a tent shaped pen with about 10 qauil 200 yards from the house.
She is in a 20x20 right now and plan on fencing -4ft- another 20x20 run for more room. Quail would be either in the garage or about 20 yards away across a little creek- elevated pen about 8x3.

ps- only got one setter- she is 7 months old

not any issues with having your own pen the biggest thing is don't let your pup run up to the pen and circle it trying to get at the birds. if this starts to happen then you'll have a tuff time getting the to stay steady later on. it's real hard on a bird dog especially a young one when the thing they desire most in the world is only inches away and they cant get to it no matter how hard they try.

just my 2 cents
