Greetings - I have been looking for a good combination of field dog/family companion and came across this web site. It looks like it could be a source of great information.

My primary interest would be a dog that I could take hiking and occasionally hunting. Hunting options are limited here unless you have access to large tracks of land, but there are plenty of places to walk and enjoy the outdoors. Looking for a dog that would enjoy being outdoors and walking though fields and brush as much as I do. Also need a dog that will be comfortable in the house and back yard - with my wife - when I am at work. Would like a medium size dog that's easier to transport than, say, a lab or one of the bigger breeds. The dog needs to be able to respond well to the grand-kids. Not looking for a temperamental- high strung dog. The shorter the coat the better as stickers and briars are a major problem in the fields of North Texas. Not crazy about the idea of spending two hours brushing for every 1/2 hour walking. Would like a dog breed that is reasonably smart - but does not need to be a super-computer. I don't necessarily want a dog smarter than me (when I told that to my wife she said I had better stick to goldfish then :)

From all that I have read, It seems that a Brittany Spaniel, maybe specifically a French Brittany Spaniel, would make a good combination of traits, temperament, size, etc.

Any other thoughts from any one else on the forum - am I over looking some other breed that would be a good fit too?

Thanks!

Kinda' sounds like you've already decided.

I suggest that by choosing a certain sized dog you are probably limitting your options too much. Nothing should be more important than choosing the right disposition for your lifestyle. It may not come in the 35 lb package.

If you're thinking a Brittney might be what you want, do some research into good quality breeders. Contact them and discuss your thoughts, and they'll be happy to let you know if a Brittney is a good fit. Breeders who've been in the business for a long time know exactly what kind of home is the best fit for the dog.

The AKC website has breeder listings. You can easily find a breeder in your area and start your research there. Another source is local breed clubs. Here's the link to the national club. From there you can find regional clubs. Contact a club officer or two - they'll be happy to help you.

Good luck

If briars and stickers are a problem, a Britt or any spaniel for that matter might not be the answer for you unless you plan on shaving them all the time.
