entropic eyes in vizsla puppies

Postby mel » Sun Jan 30, 2011 10:45 am

I recently purchased a vizsla puppy 4 months old. She is a beautiful pup smart, mostly plus on all attributes except eyes, The first morning I noticed a discharge in one eye and a few days later in both eyes. I took her to my vet and he said she had a mild entropian with her lower eye lids. He said that she might out grow this condition by the time she is a year old. Of, course. in my opinion, This disqualifies her from being used for breeding. Am I right? I have had hunting dogs for years but never a VIZSLA. Should an experienced breeder have notice the eye problem since there is matter in her eyes every morning. Will she out grow this problem. Returning the pup is not possible as my wife and I are both very attached to her. How successful are the eye operations? I will appreciate your comments.

Mel,

First, sorry to hear about your pup it is an inconvienece but not a big problem. You are right the dog should be spayed at 16 months of age and not bred. I would also let the breeder know that there was a problem with the pup. He should not breed the bitch again in my opinion.

As far as the pup goes there is a chance that the pup will grow into its skin and stretch the eye out, but unlikley.

What are the options ? Well some folks take them to the vet and tack them up so there is no contact on the eye from the lid. Then in 6 months they take the tacks out and see if it has healed itself from maturity.
Or the other option is to have the eyes lasered. They take the laser and cut a small piece of skin off the bottom lid.

If done right the dog will have no problems and you will have a great dog.

Yes, in my opionion the breeder should of caught it and told you about it.

Good luck,

Yes, I did, but she responded that it was not a genetic trait for vizslas? This is such a smart pup and so cooperative. her sire is a 2 time national gun dog champ. How can the breeder even say something so outrageous. Irregardless I will have her spaded and her eyes fixed.
I appreciate your imput, Griffman.

It is NOW !! What a d&^%b comment !

She needs to know that a Vet consulted with you and diagnosed it as such. Send her a signed letter from the vet. Not that you want reimbursment from her, but to know that it is a genetic trait and that she should watch it in the breeding so that it doesn't happen again.

Lets see some pict of that red bone dog !!
