Weimer issues

Postby bratt's » Sun Jan 31, 2010 1:36 pm

I have a ten year old Weimer that has excessive ear infections and a problem with licking his leg until it bleeds. He is a house/shop dog that gets lots of attention and is a wonderful hunting dog. He has a pond and acreage to roam when he wants and I would say has a pretty good life. I have been cleaning ears and healing wounds since I have owned him and I am cool with that. The vet has tried everything and nothing seems to be a perminent fix. Just wondering is any of you have experience with this sort of thing. I have heard everything from allergies to anxiety and treated for all of them. I love my DRAKOOOOS, and I will continue to care for him as long as he is still with us. But if you know how I could make his life a little better by ridding him of these issues, that would be awesome. Thanks.

Have you tried some other dog foods? I have heard of similar problems relating to food allergies. Also, a second opinion from another vet is always a good idea when you get stumped on something. Sorry I am not much help.

We have tried other foods and two other vets. Our vets advice keeps the problems manageable but I just haven't found a way to get over the hump and knock the issues out for DRAKE. Thanks for the replying.

have you tried aggressively treating for mites

another idea is what level of protein are you feeding many people feed to high proteins which may be to hot for the dog causing the issues

scarcoptic mites are hard to find and I do know of dogs that were treated for allergies until mites were found and after aggressive treatment haven't had any problems since and yes oddly enough when fed cheaper poorly processed grain diets the dog had more issues until treated

I know for a fact that mites have not come up in any of the conversations with my vet. Thank you for a new avenue to explore. I will ask him about mites and if we can treat for them. I will also discuss the food we are feeding and see if we can improve in that department as well. Thank you so much for some new information, I feel like I have been beating my head against a wall for so long with little results. I will let you know how it turns out.

Has he in fact tested for yeast in the ear.? Momentamax works well for that, but you can only use it for 6-7 days then take a break, then do another treatment. It can make the dog go deaf is what My vet told me, he is very good but you have to be carefull, it does work and now that I know what to do, I would not hesitate to use it again. I also had that trouble. I switched dog food and the problem is gone. I don't think the corn based product worked for my dog.

the lady was treating her dog for allergies for 5 years...She went ahead and bred her dog and the pups at about 6 weeks of age all started scratching and loosing hair the vet said extremely unlikely whole litter would have allergies so he did scrapes all over and finally found mites.

I would also try a different food. Try something with chicken and rice or lamb and rice formula. Don't go with the super expensive stuff your vet has, there are plenty of cheaper and just as good alternatives.

what got me the most about the whole thing was either case mange which the dogs body wasn't able to keep in check or allergies that female shouldn't have contributed to the gene pool
