TPLO surgery

Postby labmom » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:41 pm

I have a two yr old BLF who has TPLO surgery about a year ago. We just recently aquired her as a breeding prospect. She has an amazing pedigree and has a ton of talent in the field. She is totally healed and has been running and training since. We took her out for her first training session since getting her on Saturday. She ran two sets of doubles and three or four cold blinds with breaks in between. When we got home she was limping a bit on the uninjured leg. By the next morning she wasn't limping but looked a little stiff. I think she is overcompensating with her good leg. Have you had a dog with an ACL injury and what did you do for them? I am going to change her food to one with glucosamine in it and give her some cod liver oil suppliments. Any advice on how to keep her healthy and out of pain with be helpful. We wanted to run her in Senior tests this summer. Thanks.

I am not a lab guy, but I had a shorthair with an ACL injury. We did water therapy and then I slowly started roading him to get him back in shape. You have to remember these are athletes and you have to bring injuries around slow. Even if it was a year ago you still will need to take special care to make sure your dog is in proper shape. That injury will always be there.

Thanks. I was thinking that swimming would be good for her, but it's a little cold for that still. She will be doing a lot of it this summer though. My kids are like fish in the summer, all they want to do is go to the lake! :-)

Swimming is great. Lots of movement and no pressure.
