pointer & retrieverHas anyone ever hunted a German Shorthair Pointer and a Golden Retriever together? Wondering how would this work if the GSP on a point and the retriever just comes in. Would you advice working with honoring or ?
Re: pointer & retrieverI hunted my shorthairs with some golden’s twice. They pointed and the golden’s came in and flushed.
Worked ok. Not sure how it would work on a regular basis. Whoever said you can’t buy happiness never had a new puppy!
Re: pointer & retrieverAlright since now have a 10 months old German Shorthair Pointer that has already gone out hunting. Also just got a 12 weeks old Golden retriever which is already showing good signs towards clipped wings. So will work with them and might be a nice teamwork out in the fields.
Re: pointer & retrieverI have a client at the pheasant preserve that hunts a GSP with a lab. His shorthair locates the birds and points them, his lab is kept at heal until he commands. Then the lab goes in and flushes the birds and gets the better portion of the retrieves. This week he shot a double on roosters and both dogs had their own retrieve. It can work out okay.
Re: pointer & retrieverI hunt my lab with a German Wirehair and a shorthair. Most of the time the pointers work toghether while me and my lab will work a different part of the cover almost doing our own thing. during hunting when all three dogs are together and the pointers lock up. I heel my lab and slowly walk up on the point. If the bird doesnt flush when I am walking towards the point I will stand next to the lead dog on point, HOLD her there for a moment, and then tell her to "hunt 'em up". She'll then flush it.
I was taught to do it that way by a trainer in KS. It is supposed to help those pointers hold the point - as long as they feel their point has been honored. If you let the golden just run in wild and flush the bird the pointer will start thinking "why should I hold a point? the other dog is just goig to flush it anyway." then the pointer will start flushing as soon as he see the golden coming - if he continues to point at all.
