Building a Dog Run for a GSP

Postby Flying-Iggy-Rocket » Fri Mar 25, 2011 9:49 am

I have a GREAT GSP that is 2 years old. I have a baby girl turning 1 in April. I am trying to take back my yard while giving the dogs (1 mutt, 1 GSP) a covered area, 15' x 15' and a run, 15' x 60'. I am a beginner when it comes to GSP's but I want to get this run right so they are happy and I dont waste money and, to solve the problem, once and for all, of the dogs digging under and living under the house. Iggy has never jumped our 6' fence though she has tried to climb it and hurt herself. I am sure she could if she tried. I would prefer a 4 ' fence in the dog run for aesthetics, but think it would be smarter to do 5'. Some one suggested that we use an invisible fence in tandem with the 4 or 5 foot fence to reinforce their boundaries. I am looking for thoughts on the fence and thoughts on planning a run. The dogs would live in this run instead of in the yard AND under my house, their current den. She is a family dog first and only hunts occasionally.

I appreciate any advice. - Susan

Susan, it sounds like you have things handled. Our dogs have 5 x 10 kennels with access to two 50 x 150' exercise yards. We have found that you have less digging, climbing and destruction when the dogs do not have 24 hr access to the yards. I would suggest using the 15 x 15 area as a confined kennel. Our dogs are let out in groups twice a day for 1 to 4 hours at a time depending on the weather, training, etc. They are more than happy to go back to their individual kennels after a good romp for some R & R. One of our yards has a 6 ft fence and the other is 5 ft. We do have a couple dogs that cannot run in the 5 ft yard, they have learned to fly over quite easily ;) Digging can also be a problem if they are left in the yard too long. Good luck!
