akc papers

Postby seggiman » Wed Nov 24, 2010 7:05 pm

I bougth a chesapeak from a breeder in North Dakota and he told me that he would send the AKC papers to me.When the dog was about four months old I called and asked about the papers,I was told that he was waiting to see what color the puppies turned out to be before registering them.At five and ahalf monthes I called and got a voice mail and have not heard from him.Now the dog is six months and I have no papers. This was not a cheap dog I drove from Oregon to pick this dog up and with no papers I can not get any hunt titles if I want to do that.Does any one have any thoughts on this subject.

Thanks SEggiman

Sounds like the breeder didn't do his part maybe didn't hvae the sire DNA'd or just not papered period

Do you have a copy and/or proof of payment

I would make two efforts one bring registered mail the other via email and let him know that if you don't get your pups papers with in 45 days you will show how you paid and you still do not have papers and post his name / Kennel so that other people do not fall for his high priced unpapered pups

as long as you post the truth then you are in the clear

Sorry but if the guy is avoiding you that sure doesn't sound good

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Why did you go to North Dakota for a pup? Some of the best retriever breeders in the country are here in the pacific northwest.

Did you get a written contract or purchase agreement that identifies the Dog and Dam by registration number? If you did, then contact the AKC. Give them the registration numbers of the parents and ask if the litter was ever registered. They will contact the breeder if it was. If it wasn't then you may have been ripped off.

If you have a contract, you have a small claims case. Costs you almost nothing to go to small claims court, and the judge will tend to lean in favor of the consumer in a case like yours.

Good luck.

Don't know if this would be helpful or not. But, I think I remember hearing somewhere that you could pay a vet $100-$200 dollars to do the DNA testing to prove the breed was full blooded. After that you can either have the vet apply on your behalf or do it yourself for an extra 40-50. It would be worth the price if you plan to breed, if not just throw him in training and forget it.

Sorry but this is incorrect information
all you can do with a pup with no paper is get an ILP from AKC to enter events but the dog would have to be spayed or neutered prior to getting those papers
There is no reputable/recognized registry that will give a dog papers with unknown lineage and allow that dog to reproduce and register those puppies.

Just another example of what not to do. No paper work, no buy. For sure you want in writing a contract or puppy agreement upon deposit. Also walk away if no pappers upon pickup. It is unexcusable to not be prepared for you.

Exactly!!! It took twice for me to learn this lesson (hardheaded? I must be...lol)!! I got the papers from the breeders but I had to report both to AKC, who can do nothing about it, and I wrote some really strongly worded emails, made a couple of serious phone calls. It was not fun.

Now, I even put on any ad that I make that papers are ready when pups are and will be given with the pups!

Blue River Kennel said it right... no papers, no buy! Once the money changes hands and the pup goes home with you, that is a done deal for too many people, papers or no papers.

At this point all I can advise is to get real stern if you have to. Do you know the names of the parent dogs (you may be able to do it with the name of the breeder)? You can call AKC to see if a litter has been registered to this person, or these dogs within the last 6 months or so...they won't give you much but they will tell you a little so you know if papers have even been obtained.

I had not heard about being able to get paperwork through testing before. Will have to check into that as I have a rescue that I cannot register and would really love to be able to. Hate to spend the $$ but she is a great hunter.

Oops...posted before reading through...guess that's why I haven't heard of it...not true! Well, I planned on getting her spayed anyway, she can still hunt.
