First Time Breeder

Postby Egge's Brittany » Sat Apr 03, 2010 3:21 pm

I am wanting to breed my Brittany and I am a first time breeder - I was hoping to get some help and information on what to do and any tricks of the trade. Any help would be great!

1st Have a plan for the puppies you do not sell before you consider breeding..If you can not handle having 3 or 4 pups that do not sell ..please reconsider as many people who start out run into this issue and then end up trying to give away the rest or turning them in to rescue There are enough dogs in rescue programs

Have your brittany OFA'd www.offa.org to learn more about OFA this is So you can show people that you have bred a brittany with passing hips..The mate should also be OFA'd.. With so many litters available to people you should make sure you are doing things which make a person feel more comfortable about choosing a brittany puppy from you. Look at the breeders section see what they offer sure some are over board but they do that trying to protect the breed they love and have worked hard for in their programs after you research that some then put your self in the buyers shoes as ask yourself why should someone want to purchase from you.

Is your dog representative of the breed no disqualifying faults ..Hunts biddable no health issues again Hips clear no allergies or immune issues No serious conformation issues like bad bites ...Is the dog gunshy or have other undesired traits these also are not good traits to breed from again There are many well planned litters out there if your dog isn't trialed or proven under an outside source of judging then seek some help for someone to evaluate your dog as word of mouth can also help or hurt...Local training group guys sees your dog and says that dog has potential research your lines and then find a proven stud dog from similar type lines you may pay more but your odds of producing more uniformed type pups is better plus you will open up more to people who seek the lines and know the sire

Pedigrees are nice but the dog is the key to a pup the pedigree is the icing to the cake and a nice ped will not make up for what the dog lacks

what if someone does have a problem with a pup from you what is your guarantee to them a replacement pup or what

or if something happens and the people can no longer take care of pup/dog will you take it back or will you care if they dump the dog at the pound or rescue

and again can not stress enough..first and most important thing to plan for is What will you do with the puppies you do not sell

Good Luck

hi

If you are a first time breeder so I think you should contact with the dogs doctor or trainer, because only they can suggest you batter.you should not take risk on this. All the best
