Always have them removed. My personal preference is by a veterinarian. It's not expensive, the pups can be evaluated at the same time for other issues and if they're not removed, it's an ugly wound to have one torn off as an adult dog.

I do my own similar to the video but with a small curved manicure scissors where you can get down and get all of it. I then use surgical glue and I'm done. I actually like to do them a tad older at about 5 days because I can make sure I get all of it and they also bleed less.

Excellent description of the proper technique to remove dewclaws. I sure dont like to fix torn dewclaws on adult dogs either.

I like the information already provided here. I do them ourselves with another breeder. With my current litter I had them done 30 hrs after the pups where whelped. The pups seemed to stable enough at the time. I must say I had a lot less bleeding this time around. Other litters I always did them on the 3rd day.

I just looked over the areas where the dews where. They have healed over very nicely and I can't even tell if they had any at all. The tail tips are forming hair over the tips as well at week 4 of age.

Dewclaws in both front and rear can cause a bit of worry in dog owners. Fear that nail will catch on something during a run and be torn off and cause injury to the dog is a valid fear. So this must be removed at the soonest time.
