Quality Chesapeakes Selectively Bred to Hunt - Chesapeake Bay Retrievers in Ashley, North Dakota - Wyndham and Wyndhamian RetrieversThe Wyndham Chesapeakes are a very focused kennel of working Chesapeakes. Founded in 1953 by the then 10 year opld Ed Atkins the aim remains today 56 years later to provide sound durable and easy to train animals for Mr. Atkins shooting hobby. During the past 56 years member of this kennel shooting teams have averaged better than 12 shooting seasons of work. All puppies are born and raised in the house so that they may be handled several times a day from birth to insure bonding to humans. At between 2 1/2 and 3 weeks when the pups indicate any interest in the arrival of mothers dinner the come command on a whistle is introduced so that within a week all pups in the litter will come running to the whistle. At six weeks each pup is taken into a dead end space and allowed to pursue a slowly rolling rubber ball. As they reach for it with their mouths the whistle command beckons them to bring the object they captured to the human as fast as possible. This also quickly becomes a reflex response and will stay with the pup for the remainder of its life. At eight weeks the normal sit and stay commands are introduced with much positive reward in the form of petting verbal praise and cuddling. Between 11 and 13 weeks (+or- a couple of days) each pup retained in the home kennel is very positively taught to take a line, angle lines, back, angle backs and over on the kitchen floor.More important than the skills taught the pup is learning to totally trust the human and work as a team. At no time in their life will any of these animals be force to retrieve or will an electric collar be used on them. They are bred and nurtured to retrieve and to please their owner. At the current time our deadgrass colored outcross female, Wyndhams Dakota Golden Goose, who decends from some very old mid-western working stock, has been mated to the rugged but totally lovable brown dog, Wyndhams Raging River. Ranger represents a female family shot over by Mr. Atkins for nine generations, and his sire is from another very old and true mid-western hunting strain, line bred to FC/AFC Raindrop of Deerwood and tracing to dogs known to be in the Dakota's, Minnesota and Iowa as far back as the 1870's. Both animals, Goldie at just short of 7 years and Ranger at 9 years are totally sound and healthy veterans in the field. Goldie had one previous litter and has hard working pups from the inland waterway of North Carolina to the Pacific Coast. Ranger has sired two previous litters and has excellent progeny from the Texas coastal flats to the Gulf of Alaska. Each has worked well on both waterfowl and upland birds. They are very focused hard driving workers and overtly friendly toward people and other dogs. Several pups from this litter are already reserved by people with many years of experience owning and hunting Chesapeakes. Those wishing an easy to train, durable hunter and family companion are advised that a couple of puppy reservation slots remain at this time.
