![]() About Hartley's Quality ShorthairsHartley's Quality ShorthairsHere at Hartley's Quality Shorthairs we strive to produce a trainable, intelligent, natural, even tempered GSP with loads of style. Our dogs are not only known for their hunting ability, but their energized, personable, and pleasing temperaments. We raise litter one of pups per year. We'll plan the breeding quite a few months in advance. We want each litter to produce quality & consistent pups. A lot of work goes into our breeding program, but more joy comes out of it!! We take pride in all the great pups we have produced. Some pups are pointing wild quail in AZ @ 3 months, some are guiding preserves @ 4 months old, and some are pointing wild grouse, huns, and quail @ 4 months. I say this not as a brag, but these are true quality dogs!!

I have been working with Roxxy and she has been doing amazingly very well. She is doing so well; I decided to take her on her 1st real solo hunt today at the Let the Good Times Fly preserve. Since, her mouth is not large enough to retrieve pheasants, I chose chucker. There was a slight breeze out of the north so I started her going west about 50 yards down wind from the first bird. You could just see when she crossed into the scent of the bird, she took a hard right and tracked right up to it within about 15 yards away from the hiding Chucker and froze solid on point. She held tight until we flushed it and when we dropped the bird, she bolted where it dropped, picked it up and brought it back to us, all giddy. She gave it on command and jumped around full of excitement. I tried to give her a treat as I praised her, but she wanted no part of it and only wanted to find the next bird. Over the next 2 hours she found 10 birds (some twice) and handled each one amazingly well. Both the ones that sat tight to the flush, as well as the ones the tried to sneak off for a wild flush. I was committed to not shoot at any that she did not do right and she nailed them all. On one point, there were two birds in one bush and she retrieved them both, starting with the one that dropped long and then as she passed the closer one, it started to run. She started to race after it with the first bird still in her mouth, As she raced past my son, she dropped it at his feet without even a command to “Give” and continued on to catch up to the second Chuckar and retrieve it. As you know she is only 4 months and 9 days old. She has been great with the family and they all love her lots. Obviously, she is not perfect on every command all the time but, these are the ones that she has learned and is quite consistent in honoring the command: Sit, Here, Heel, Whoa, Kennel, No,Potty, Find … (point something when she finds it (i.e. treat, bird ball etc), Get… (Fetch), Go & Over with hand signals (up, left and right for retrieving and quartering), Kitchen (she is only allowed to be on the kitchen tile), Steady (for treats on her nose & catch it before it hits the ground), Shake & High Five. Thanks again for a great hunting pup and friend, Dale Submitted by: Erik Karas on Jul 28, 2009 We found Lantz and Hartley's Quality Shorthairs on the internet. They had a started dog for sale and that was just what we were looking for. When I talked to Lantz on the phone and told him the kind of dog we were looking for he told me without hesitation that the dog he had for sale wasn't for us. This dog was $1800, and you don't often find any one that would give up a sale like that for any reason, but it was exactly because he did that, that we stayed with him and waited for just the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier with that decision. Over the next month or so, Lantz watched his new litter of pups to see which one might be the right match for us. We were looking for a pretty mellow dog that I could take to work with me, would lay on a pillow while I studied, would be good with kids but still lived to hunt. Lantz narrowed the list down to just a couple and then finally down to one. We talked on the phone and emailed over the following months and he sent us a continual stream of very much anticipated pictures and even some video so we could keep up with Coda's progress. We were able to visit once in the middle of the training and Lantz helped train us which I think was more difficult than any of Coda's training. When we finally came to pick Coda up, we were graciously welcomed into their home and it was easy to see how Lantz was able to raise such a great all around hunting and family dog for us. We could not be happier with our new family member or our dealings with Hartley's Quality Shorthairs. We have not only received a new furry member of our family but some great new human friends as well. One final note: There are a few fortunate people in this life who are able to discover their gifts at a very early age and fewer still who are fortunate enough to be able to develop those gifts right away. Lantz is one of these fortunate, fortunate people. He has a great gift with dogs and that gift has fueled a passion for gaining more and more knowledge, skill and experience in a very short time. You could not be in more competent, gifted, honest and compassionate hands as you look for your next best friend. Rev. Erik Karas Eaton, Colorado Submitted by: Trevor Stauffer on Jul 28, 2009 Lantz-Sorry it has taken me so long to get back with you. Hopefully through our original emails and conversations you know how I feel about Lex. He is an incredible dog with exceptional hunting instincts. He pointed the first bird we put him on as if he had done it athousand times (At the age of 4 months). It was very natural for him and now he cannot get enough. When we get ready to "go find some birds" he shakes with excitement. He holds his point and does very well with the 'Whoa' command; not to mention his point is very intense. His nose is awesome! If the wind is favorable, he'll start pointing birds 30 ft away and start moving ever so slowly in that direction as he is still trying to figure out his range. All of these attributes have been present without a lot of effort on my part. All I have done is provide a field and some birds and he has taught himself the hunting aspect. We grew up hunting behind really good GSP's and my Dad says none of his dogs pointed and held point that early and that good. He has a great temperament, as you can see in the picture with my daughter (Faythe). She lays on him and pulls his ears and he just licks her. He also plays well with all children he is around. He loves to be around and do everything the family does. He obviously is a well bred GSP and we couldn't be happier. I love hunting behind GSP's, it is one the the best childhood memories I have with my Dad and now I have the opportunity to do the same with my children. Thanks Lantz and Hartley's Quality Shorthairs for breeding such a wonderful dog! Thanks, Trevor C. Stauffer Submitted by: Julie Owley on Jul 28, 2009 Hi Lantz-Here is an update on the pup-we named him Otto. He's doing great, and I think he's wonderful! He's adjusted well to the other dogs and they have accepted him as part of the family. He loves to relax with us, he's really wild for only a minute or two, then he settles right down and conks out, usually resting his head on one of us. I'm so glad we made the choice to come to Utah. I believe we have found a wonderful companion and bird dog. I absolutely adore Otto, and thank you so much for letting us have him. We plan to keep in touch with you and keep you updated on his progress. We have some video that we plan to put on a disc and send your way, but I think we will add more before we actually do that. Until the next update, take care and thanks again. We are really happy with Otto, Julie Owley Submitted by: John Prince on Nov 23, 2008 I met Lantz through the GUN DOG BREEDERS, I appreciate what GUN DOG BREEDERS has done for alot of us out there. The site has brought alot of bird dog enthusiasts together and if not for the site I would not have met Lantz. I would like to say that Lantz is a young man that has a TRUE PASSION for producing fine GUN DOGS with the NATURAL ABILITY TRAIT! I commend him for both sharing a passion for producing the best and being a young Outdoors man. He truly has a passion for seeing dogs work in the field and would be lost without it I believe. Lantz, is a young man who has a burning desire to be in the field and have GREAT DOGS! This is the kind of young man that we need today to carry on our sport and has the drive and dedication to put the best QUALITY GSP out there. It is through dedication to both the sport and producing fine dogs that he will excel in yrs to come. There are many us who could learn through their experiences with Lantz that it is not how many dogs a person raises or sells but that the carachter in which the person does so in this field. Lantz, I appreciate you for having the burning desire to pass on strong genetics to produce the best. It is with this passion that you will go far, to the people out there who want a TRULY fine GUN DOG, think of LANTZ, he might sound young but dont over look what he is trying to do for the breed. He has what it takes to produce the best, YOUTHh has nothing to do with it, PASSION,DESIRE AND DRIVE does, if these were traits that all of our GUN DOGS had there would not be a bad one in the bunch. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK LANTZ! YOU ARE A CREDIT TO THE DOG WORLD! written by PRINCE'S QUALITY GUN DOGSSubmitted by: Cheryl Matthiesen on Jul 17, 2008 I have seen Lantz' dogs first hand. He has some nicely put together pups with incredible drive. Thanks for sharing your dogs with me!Cheryl |
