Submitted by: Jessica Kendrick on Dec 18, 2011I have known Russ at Melrose Kennel for many years. I have raised and helped train several Melrose Gordons with excellent hunting results. In our home and around our young family we find the Gordon Setter to be easy going with a loving personality, a very loyal family dog. Being a mother of small children, a dogís temperament is most important to me. Russís knowledge and dedication to the breed of field Gordon Setters is unsurpassed. When you visit plan to spend time talking to Russ and to view his collection of Gordon and English Setter artwork.
Submitted by: Nick Shigouri on Oct 12, 2011I got a male gordon off a farm in southern Missouri, and though he showed early interest in birds, Russ Guevel turned this dog into a hunting pro! Teddy spent 2 months with Russ and the transformation was near unbelieveable. Russ is a true professional and top shelf at what he does. My dog is perfect, my hunts are great, and I owe it all to Russ at Melrose.
Submitted by: Joe Bubulka on Oct 11, 2011I highly reccomend Melrose Kennels for both thier quality dogs as well as expert training of your gun dog. I have known Russ since 1999 when I bought my first Gordon Setter from him. I was looking for a started dog and after talking with me about my interests he reccomended a started male as a good fit for me. Sport was a great hunting dog and companion with whom I spent the next 11 years. Each year hunting him in SD and local preserves. Sport was an excellent gun dog. He worked the fields hard, had an excellent nose, and was extremely cooperative, and solid on point. I am a repeat customer having purchased my second Gordon from Russ. Kody, is living up the the standards set by his predecessor. I trusted Russ to provide his basic training as wel as returned for "Whoa" breaking. We are getting ready to head to SD for the opener and I am looking forward to the hunt. In my book there is no one better to train your gun dog. I also trusted Russ to introduce my Pointing Lab to birds and Whoa break my brothers wire hair. Both with excellent results. OK, Bottomline, Great guy, great dogs, great training, you cant go wrong.
Submitted by: Wesley J. Carriool on Oct 09, 2011I used Russ at Melrose Kennels to help me train my new English Setter puppy. Russ and I worked together many times over the course of the spring, summer and fall to get my puppy, Finn, to where he needed to be to go hunting. Russ was very flexible to my busy schedule and we got training in when my busy schedule allowed for it. Russ' facilities are top-notch and his knowledge of how to train dogs is incredible. Russ helped me to be patient in my approach, someting novice trainers and bird-dog owners seem to universally lack. We had a wonderful time working together this summer and I won't hesitat to take my next puppy to Russ for training. Now, we're ready to head into a seaso, where hopefully I will not create too many mistakes Russ has to fix this spring.
Submitted by: Dave Dunshee on Oct 01, 2011Russ is a very knowledgeable and experienced trainer and breeder. He raises bold and stylish Gordon Setters. He really knows bird dogs and is very enthusiastic about his work.
Russ has trained several dogs for me, all of different ages, levels of experience and temperaments. He customizes the training for each individual dog and they return from his kennel well trained, more confident and better equipped to be successful in the field.
I would recommend Russ to anyone in need of a great trainer or bird dog.
