Craney Hill Kennel - Illinois English Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel Breeders
About Craney Hill Kennel
Welcome to Craney Hill Kennel. Our spaniel training program is designed to create dogs utilized for wild bird hunting, spaniel field trials and spaniel hunt tests. Our focus and passion is developing a flushing bird dog that is comfortable at home, yet exciting and effective in the field. We want to work with clients who are as passionate about wild bird hunting as we are, have high standards and are committed to achieving established goals. The following information will outline how we can help you achieve your goals with your flushing gun dog.
Our focus is to prepare your dog for the "real-world" field trial of bird hunting. With that in mind, our training is concentrated in preparing for the gun season. The fact is that very few spaniels can be consistently competitive at AKC Spaniel Field Trials. However, we believe all spaniels competing in these field trials should be hunted. This may be in a controlled environment, at a young age for bird exposure or to build enthusiasm, but spaniels should not be bred that have not proved that they can find birds other than in training or at a game. As such, we train for competition AND bird hunting.
We will develop a strong foundation for your dog's entire life...from puppy through adult. Look over our website and contact us to discuss your needs. We stress educating the owner and value for your money spent so only those serious about a top-level bird dog, field trial competition or hunt test participation need inquire. We provide monthly gun dog training
, trained dog and puppy sales, field trial training and campaigning, a Gun Dog Training Seminar
and private consultations. Please contact us
for more information on these services.
If you are looking to purchase a field-bred English Springer or Cocker Spaniel
, we sell puppies, Started and Finished dogs. We sell only a limited number of spaniel puppies each year. This is because we primarily sell trained spaniels and keep the majority of each litter so we can develop these puppies in our gun dog training program for our clients. An added benefit to this program is that it allows us to work with our own breedings and test these gun dogs in real hunting environments to be sure that our breeding program is creating the type of spaniel gun dogs that are easy to live with and easy to train. Our trained spaniels are typically sold in advance and the delivery time is 1-2 years depending on the level of training and when the order is made.
We have three Gun Dog Training Camps during the year. They are created to maximize the specific needs of gun dogs based upon their current training level.
The objectives for our "Basic" gun dog training camp are to set a strong foundation for your dog, which includes proper introduction and exposure to birds, proper gun introduction, basic obedience, hunting in control and basic retrieving. This school has historically included puppies and young dogs, or experienced dogs that have become self-hunters and are hunting out of control/gun range.
The objective of our "Advanced" gun dog training camp is to build on the foundation previously established at one of our gun dog training schools, or the foundation put in place by the owner. Dogs learn proper use of the wind while hunting in control, develop a reliable retrieve, and take part in a conditioning program prior to the opening of bird season. This camp is what you need prior to opening day!
The objectives for our "Wild Bird" gun dog training camp are to provide unmatched experience and exposure to actual hunting situations. These situations include not only consistent wild bird exposure, but it also includes exposure to a variety of hunting cover and conditions. This cover ranges from open pasture, CRP, sloughs and fence lines that hold wild pheasants to thick woods and alder runs that hold grouse and woodcock. This gun dog training camp is conducted in the heart of wild pheasant and/or grouse/woodcock country during the season and allows dogs of all ages to learn how to find and produce wild birds. Historically, owners that have sent their dogs to this camp have wanted to provide the very best opportunity for their dog's to reach their full genetic potential. Not everyone can hunt for 30-60 days straight. Send your dog with us to get it the experience it deserves!
Our seminars are held at either our dog training facility in Cornell, Illinois, hunting preserves, or actual wild bird hunting environments. The utilization of dog training facilities and natural habitats allow participants to observe, first hand, the manner in which to configure fields and yard set-ups, while highlighting the importance of things like good cover, quartering strips, and agility equipment for flushing dog training.
This seminar is for you if you want to consistently have your dog hunt within range of the guns, learn to obey even with distractions, or get your dog to a level to pass hunt tests. If you want to stop yelling and correcting your dog, you need to take this seminar! Class size is limited so plan accordingly.
